Crucible Live Play vs. Reading

The Crucible Comparisons
Salem Witch Trials Court Session
Throughout the play, The Crucible, Abigail continually gets her way and influences people by putting on acts that convince them. She eventually has the entire town, except for a select few, believing everything that comes out of her mouth. Ultimately, The higher class people or the so-called intelligent and important members of society fall victim to the little girls games and accusations.
A specific situation that this happens is when Mary Warren is about to tell the truth about everything that has happened and before she can say anything Abigail starts screaming along with the other girls that Mary is summoning spirits to attack her. At this time everyone is so witchcraft crazed that even the mention of it sets them off. With all the prior situations, it was very easy for Abigail to persuade the judges that what she was experiencing was real and was actually spirits. Abigail by that point had realized that she had complete control over everyone and whatever she said would go over as true. So if anyone got in her way she was easily able to wipe him or her out as seen in this situation with Mary Warren. Her influence was so strong that she was able to convince Mary Warren to come back to her side after she was about to tell the truth.
This example was very effective on stage as well as in the reading. I actually think it was more effective on stage because you got to see the reactions of all the people involved at the same time. It was better able to portray the intensity of the moment and it was not just reading words off of paper. You were able to see the expressions of astonishment from the judges and the ministers. In the reading, although it was good, it is hard to fully obtain the full strength of any situation because you are only reading and dealing with one person at a time. While with the play, every character is involved at the exact same time.

  1. You made a great point by saying that the whole town was "witch crazed". This had a huge impact when Mary Warren was accusing Abigail, because as soon as she started acting like she saw spirits, it was quickly decided that Abigail was being honest. I also agreed with how you said a play portrays the emotions of all the actors, while when you read a play, you only get the emotion of one character at a time.

  2. I agree with you about Abigail, she really can make anyone believe her. That town is so obsessed with finding witches they do not know they are being lied to, and from a 17 year old girl. Also, the play is different from just reading the script. Like you said, there is a lot more emotion that comes out of it and the reactions are better during a play.
